LEGAL HELP FOR VICTIMS

A LEGAL hotline to provide free assistance to Hunter flood victims has been set up with the help of the Newcastle Law Society. The hotline will handle a variety of inquiries ranging from those who wish to seek advice before speaking to insurance companies, to more complicated disputes. The hotline can be reached on 1800 357 596.

BLACKBUTT TO STAY SHUT

BLACKBUTT Reserve at New Lambton would remain closed until the middle of next week as the clearing of fallen trees continued, Newcastle City Council general manager Janet Dore said yesterday.

EROSION FORCES ROAD CLOSURE

THE intersection of Lake and Main roads, Glendale, was closed yesterday due to land subsidence. Roads and Traffic Authority officers diverted traffic and asked motorists to avoid the area after floodwater caused land erosion under the road. The road is expected to remain closed until the area is deemed safe.

DAMAGE POSTPONES BALL

THE annual Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service Ball has been postponed until September due to flood damage at Newcastle Entertainment Centre. The ball, was to be held later this month but will now take place on Friday, September 21. Tickets bought for the June event will be valid in September.

CENTRE READY FOR NEMO

WORK has begun to prepare Newcastle Entertainment Centre for the Disney production of Finding Nemo after water damaged the venue in last weekend's severe storms. Work is expected to be completed next week, ahead of the June 20 Finding Nemo premiere. StarStruck has been postponed until August.

EMERGENCY RELIEF FLOODED OUT

THE Samaritans emergency relief centre at Cessnock, which provides food vouchers, clothing and other services has been relocated temporarily to the St Vincent de Paul offices in Cumberland Street.
